Great Neighbors Then and Now -- Loyola Marymount University

The Jesuit presence in Southern California is traceable through generations of California's history. Although established in 1973, Loyola Marymount University has roots that reach back to the early 1900's, to Saint Vincent's College located off modern day Venice Boulevard.

The Loyola portion of the name comes from St. Ignatius Loyola, who founded the Society of Jesus in 1548. The Marymount portion of the school's name comes from the Religious of the Sacred Heart of Mary organization, which ran Marymount Junior College.
