A product of the racial upheaval experience in the mid-1960's, the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science was incorporated as a non-profit medical learning facility. Named for Dr. Charles R. Drew, part of the school's mission is to encourage the students to have the scholastic excellence and achievement of the man for which the school is named. Dr. Drew is recognized for his work in medicine, chiefly for his role in World War II. Writing his thesis entitled "Banked Blood," Dr. Drew was responsible for developing innovative blood banking procedures helping many American and British soldiers survive the war. Further, he helped advance the civil liberties of black Americans by insisting that there were no problems or issues with the integrating and storage of blood derived from black people and those of other races. After confronting the Army and Navy, his notions are now accepted.
