Basically, a paralegal is a lawyer's assistant or a legal assistant. The job of a paralegal is to prepare the paperwork and research involved with closings, corporate meetings, hearings and trials. They investigate the details and facts of the cases and highlight the relevant and important information the lawyer should consider. Most importantly, paralegals are in charge of all the  legal documents needed by the lawyer, whether it is drafting contracts or organizing legal articles. Depending on the employer, they may also be in charge of the financial records of the office. They are the eyes and ears of the office.
 
The only duties that a paralegal is prohibited from doing are giving legal advice, presenting a case in court or any act that is perceived to be the practice of law.

There are several ways to obtain a paralegal degree. It all depends on the educational course that is desired. An associate's degree takes two years to complete and gives you the basic foundation to become a paralegal. This is a perfect option if a bachelor's degree is the next educational step because the credits from the associate's degree can transfer over to a four year institution.
 
A bachelor's degree in paralegal studies will provide a more in-depth education and would increase the chances for a promotion. A certificate program are usually best suited for students that have already obtained an associate's or bachelor's degree and want to enhance their knowledge.
 
A master's degree will give you the most thorough education in the paralegal field. This will open up doors of higher level positions within a firm.
