Pursuing a legal studies degree can lead you to many different careers.  A legal studies program teaches the fundamentals of law. Since there is no specific focus in this program, a graduate from legal studies can translate his or her skills to a wide range of professions, such as a paralegal or a criminal justice professional.
 
Each level of degree will prepare you for a specific field in law.
 
An Associate's and Certificate Program
 
In one of these programs, you will be given a foundation in legal studies and prepare yourself to be a paralegal or legal assistant. You will learn how to analyze and research legal data, investigate information for witnesses through different techniques and organize legal documents during the pretrial preparation. Also, these programs are not an extensive time commitment. Credits earned in these programs can transfer towards a bachelor's degree.
 
A Bachelor's Degree in Legal Studies
 
A bachelor's program will also provide you with the skills for a profession as a paralegal or legal assistant. Unlike an associate's or certificate program that only give you a general study of legal studies, a bachelor's program will provide you with an extensive schooling in legal studies. You will develop your organizational and analytical skills and how to apply them to a law office. There will also be a focus on how to successfully manage a legal office.
 
A Master's and PhD Program
 
A master's or PhD program will give you a thorough education in legal studies. Not only will you learn the basics of this field but you will venture deeper into the legal system. Legal theory, societal change within the legal system and the role of law are some of the focuses in these types of programs. At this level, there will be an emphasis on teaching you analytical thinking and developing a meticulous research ethic.
 
You will gain the professional skills to qualify for various careers in law, such as a legal assistant, criminal justice professional, consultant, legal newspaper reporter, resolution/peer mediation, legal advocates, information specialists and government administrators.

The need for paralegals and other professions based in legal studies are steadily rising. American society is focusing more towards homeland and international security, which in turn causes legal careers to be in demand.
